Mexico City (affectionately known as CDMX, for Ciudad de Mexico) is one of the world’s great capitals—not only the seat of government, but a culture capital par excellence. This vibrant city offers the opportunity to enjoy Mexico’s fascinating, complex history alongside a trove of art treasures.
Some of my favorite Mexico City cultural tips:
Palacio Nacional: The primary reason to visit the National Palace is the stunning array of Diego Rivera murals that adorn its interior. They depict the history of Mexico with unflinching clarity and are best appreciated with the insight and commentary of a private guide.
Teotihuacan: This impressive Mesoamerican site remains mysterious to scholars who have tried for centuries to decode the ancient civilization resonsible for its construction. The base of the Pyramid of the Sun is about the same size as the Great Pyramids in Giza and is best climbed in the morning, before the sun and crowds appear in full force. There's also plenty to marvel at on the ground. I am happy to engage a private guide on your behalf for the best experience at archaeological sites.
Palacio de las Bellas Artes: If you're a fan of Mozart in the Jungle, you may remember this gorgeous concert hall, where the orchestra performed on tour in the second season. You can attend events of all kinds, from folklorico dancing to theater to both classical and pop concerts. The lobby of this art nouveau stunner is unexpectedly adorned by modern mural masterpieces. Consider a visit even if you do not attend a show.
Bosque de Chapultepec: This sprawling park (twice as large as New York's Central Park) is lively and filled with promenading families on the weekend. It's home to a zoo, botanical garden, and several excellent museums, most notably the Anthropological Museum. Not surprisingly, this collection is a richer experience when you are accompanied by a private guide who can provide context on the various ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. (I know I keep recommending guides but fortunately, private guides in Mexico offer very reasonable rates!)
You'll also find the incredible ruins of Templo Mayor in the middle of the historic center (Zócalo). If you look closely at the nearby cathedral, you can see that the colonial Spanish rulers asserted their dominance by building parts of it with stones and bricks pilfered from the buried Aztec pyramid complex.
Food: If you're a chocoholic, you may find yourself in Heaven at the Museo del Chocolate (MUCHO). I also recommend enjoying a street food walking tour while you're here, but save room for a more upscale meal at one of the fantastic rooftop restaurants that overlook the Zócalo!
