New York is one of the world’s great cities—it's not the seat of government, but it's a culture capital par excellence. The city offers the opportunity to enjoy high-quality performances of all kinds alongside an unceasing urban energy and trove upon trove of art treasures. Some feel strongly that New York is the Creative Center of the Universe. You'll have to decide for yourself!
Some of my favorite New York cultural tips:
Hamilton Grange National Memorial: The Harlem home of Alexander Hamilton is an easy subway ride uptown (it's quiet uptown). Free tours are offered by National Park Service Rangers. Be sure to watch the video showing how the house was literally lifted over a church to reach its current plot on Hamilton's original estate. HamilFans may also want to visit the Museum of American Finance.
New York Historical Society: The society offers continually changing special exhibits as well as outstanding permanent holdings. NYHC's collection of 132 Tiffany lamps and three windows came as a bequest from a single collector and simply defies description. Make a day of it with neighboring American Museum of Natural History.
Other specialty museums: New York is full of tiny specialty museums as well as undeniable art meccas like the massive Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Museum at FIT hosts free exhibits from the extensive collection of the famed Fashion Institute of Technology. The New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn is a treat for lovers of the New York subway system (and beyond). The International Center for Photography offers excellent exhibits of both current and historic works. The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Museum focuses on American design, from textiles to technology.
Neue Galerie: This small but beautifully-curated Fifth Avenue museum focuses on Austrian and German art from the first part of the 20th century. Its crowning glory is Klimt's portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer, also known as the Lady in Gold.
Lincoln Center: Some of the world's finest opera productions, dance performances, theatrical shows and concerts are held in Lincoln Center's thirty indoor and outdoor venues. Shows in the Appel Room are a special experience, overlooking the city from high above Columbus Circle. Lincoln Center is also home the the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and a semi-secret TKTS booth outpost. Indulge at nearby Cafe Fiorello before a show.
Off-Broadway Shows: Arts lovers should never forget the fantastic productions at New York's leading off-Broadway companies: Playwrights Horizons, Second Stage, The Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, and the Atlantic Theater Company. They often develop and produce world premieres well before these new works find success on Broadway and beyond.
Late night sweet bite? Junior's cheesecake is a classic favorite but Milk Bar's Crack Pie is almost irresistible. Perfect treats after a show!
